What Happens When You Don't Brush Before Going to Sleep?

Posted on 12/30/2017 by Sandra Embree
Brushing Teeth Embree Dentistry MI 48104Have you ever debated about should you brush before you go to sleep or if you are simply too tired and will just do it in the morning? If you have, then do yourself a favor, and always err on the side of brushing.

You can get an extra two minutes of sleep in the next few days, but the damage done to your teeth may not be something you can make up later. Plus, it is exposing your mouth to things you simply do not want.

Brushing Before Going to Sleep Makes a Big Difference for Your Teeth

Bacteria love the gunk that builds up on your teeth. The more gunk there is, the faster the bacteria can replicate. Brushing helps to decrease the bacteria levels, so they are able to do less damage to your teeth. However, if you neglect brushing before going to bed, you will be offering those bacteria a feast. The more they eat, the more waste they produce.

By not brushing before you go to bed, you allow both the bacteria and waste to build up in your mouth. Then, when you first wake up in the morning and swallow to try and moisten your mouth, you swallow the excess bacteria and the waste they produced. Most people wouldn't want that as their appetizer before a meal.

To avoid this scenario, you need to make sure to brush before you head to bed each night. It only takes two minutes out of your day, but it saves you a lot of damage and stomach upset from bacteria. Take the time to brush before bed every night and spare your mouth the problems that come from forgetting even one night. Sleep is good, but two minutes of sleep isn't going to make a significant difference in your day.
