Dental ImplantsDiscover some of the best tips for making your implants last a lifetime.

Taking care of your dental implants after you get them requires a mix of both proper at-home care and maintenance from your Ann Arbor dentists Drs. Sandra Embree and Courtney Heys. If you are looking to keep your smile for the long-term then follow these simple instructions for caring for your dental implants:

Brush thoroughly and often

No other tooth replacement option offers a tooth that both looks and functions like a natural tooth. This means that you don’t have to treat your dental implant any differently than you would your natural teeth. But this doesn’t mean you can skimp out on your oral care routine just because your implant isn’t real. You still need to brush your teeth thoroughly at least twice a day for a minimum of two minutes each time. If you can brush between each meal, you’ll also do your smile a big favor.

Floss daily

Just as it’s important to remove plaque and bacteria from the surface of your teeth it’s also necessary to remove them from between teeth. While a toothbrush can sometimes get into hard-to-reach spots, it’s very hard to sufficiently get into those small spaces between teeth with just your toothbrush.

This is why you need to floss at least once a day, preferably before brushing your teeth. Talk to your Ann Arbor dentists Drs. Embree and Heys if you are unsure how to properly floss or if you have questions about the best flossing techniques.

Don’t smoke

Since smokers have a significantly increased chance of dental implant failure it’s highly recommended that you quit smoking before you opt for this dental treatment. Even after you get your implants you will want to avoid smoking at all costs. Research has found that smokers have more tartar buildup on their teeth than non-smokers and are also 3 to 6 times more likely to develop gum disease. These can cause severe issues for your implant, so it’s best to stay away from smoking any tobacco products altogether if you want your implant to last.

See your Ann Arbor dentist for routine visits

While caring for your dental implants does start at home, it’s also just as vital to the health of your smile to continue seeing your Ann Arbor dentists for six-month cleanings and exams. It’s through these visits that we can make sure that your implant remains healthy and that the rest of your smile is free of gum disease and decay. Don’t put off these visits, or you may find yourself dealing with more serious dental problems down the road.

If it’s time to schedule your next dental cleaning with your Ann Arbor dentists, or if you have any questions about caring for your implants then call Embree Dentistry today. We would be happy to schedule your next appointment or answer any of your implant questions.
