Flossing is an important part of maintaining oral hygiene. Flossing once a day is vital in preventing tooth decay, which can lead to a number of unpleasant afflictions. But, if you floss and experience pain, it could be the sign of a serious health concern.
What Causes Pain While Flossing?
Gum sensitivities can be caused by a number of problems, and are often first noticed when flossing. This is why it is so important to floss regularly, and to call us if you begin to notice pain during your normal flossing routine.
Flossing aggressively or too often can damage the gums and cause pain over time. Gums are soft and susceptible to injury; when flossing, gently caress the sides of the tooth, and try not to dig into the gums.
Those who do not floss regularly may experience pain, and light bleeding when first flossing, as the gums are very sensitive and take time adjusting to new sensations. However, if the pain is excessive, or any swelling is caused, this could be a sign of a deeper issue.
Vitamin deficiencies, food allergies, and hormonal changes can all cause changes to the gums, and lead to pain while flossing. While our dentists cannot diagnose these problems, they will be able to rule out other, common causes of gum sensitivity. Canker sores, gingivitis (gum disease), tooth abscesses, and even oral cancer are also reasons for gum sensitivity. The signs of these ailments can be identified in our office.
