It's well established that stress can cause both physical and emotional problems, such as upset stomach, headaches, and anxiety.
However, your oral health is also in jeopardy if your stress levels are high. It's always important to find ways to manage stress, not only because it can affect your health, but also because health issues due to stress are only going to make your stress worse.
Stress-Related Oral Health Issues
High stress levels can cause problems with your jaw, including issues with your chewing muscles and jaw joint. Teeth grinding is also a result of stress, which can cause structural damage to your teeth and increase your risk of tooth decay. In addition, stress can result in sores that lead to infection, which can travel through your bloodstream from your mouth to all parts of your body. This can cause problems with your immune response and can lead to gum disease.
Get to the Root of the Problem
Pinpointing your common stressors is the first step in knowing how to manage them. Once you recognize the things that cause you stress, you can target ways to either eliminate them or reduce their effect on you, such as meditation, regular exercise, and relaxing hobbies. In the meantime, consider getting a mouthguard to wear while you sleep if you grind your teeth due to stress.
Avoid hard foods if you are having any pain and avoiding alcohol and tobacco may help reduce oral health symptoms. If you feel that your stress is affecting your life too much, talk to your doctor for a referral to a psychiatrist to determine if medication might help with your stress until you can better manage it.
